How to Deal With Dental Anxiety?

  1. “It is going to hurt”
  2. Bad Experience in the past
  3. Embarrassment about your health care
  4. Anxiety about the cost

Does the thought of visiting your dentist bother you? Well, you are not alone. Perhaps you’re scared the visit might hurt or you haven’t been to a dental clinic in a while and not sure what the dentist will find.

Whatever your reason is, the right dental team will make sure that you feel comfortable and your emotional health is also taken care of.

Here are the common worries and how to overcome them:

“It is going to hurt”

If you are worried about pain, let your dentist know. There are several methods to do so. Your dentist can administer anesthesia so you don’t have to suffer. If you are afraid of needles, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) works well to help you relax first. If those two do not seem to work for you and still have anxiety to go to the dentist, sedation dentistry is the best option. Just make sure that you have a designated driver or companion during the procedure.

Bad Experience in the past

Every dentist has different methods and techniques to care for their patients. Some might not work for you but could work on other people. If you had an awful experience with a dentist, don’t let that stop you from looking for dental professionals that you would feel comfortable with. It may require some patience, but you should be able to find a team that will be a good fit for you.

Embarrassment about your health care

Believe it or not, this is a common reason why people are hesitant to visit a dentist. You might feel ashamed about the state of your teeth or are concerned about what your dentist would say. You don’t have to worry because these dental professionals have seen it all. It would not bother them so it shouldn’t bother you too.

Anxiety about the cost

Not everyone has an intended budget for oral care. Some might just visit a dentist because of an emergency or if they already feel pain and their last option is to go to a dental clinic. Dental work could be expensive, especially if your insurance does not cover it. That is why it is important to visit your dentist regularly to skip out on a more expensive procedure.

The major solution to your dental anxiety is through your dental routine. Make sure to find the right toothbrush and toothpaste. Brush your teeth 2-3 times every day followed by flossing. Communicate your feelings to your practitioner. And always feel grateful about your teeth and your body to reduce your anxiety.
