Halitosis. No one is immune to it. In fact, studies have shown that at least 50% of adults experience this condition at least once in their lives. Does that mean that those people do not practice good dental hygiene? That is possible but it is not always the case. Even with excellent dental hygiene, you can still experience bad breath. It’s not quite as clear cut as that. Aside from not flossing and brushing, there are other factors that cause our breath to stink. It is important to know these things so we would be able to properly treat or prevent this embarrassing condition.
Bacteria
Our mouths are perfect places for bacteria to grow and thrive. This is the main reason why there are a high number of people who will experience halitosis at some point in their lives. Not only are our mouths perfect places for bacteria, the food debris in our mouth also sustains them. When they consume our leftovers, they produce waste products which cause the foul stench. That is why brushing and flossing is still the best way to combat bad breath. Not only do these remove food debris that bacteria feasts on, but also remove the bacteria themselves.
Food
Sometimes it is not the bacteria that causes bad breath. Sometimes it is the food that we eat. We already know that garlic and onion are notorious for causing bad breath even after brushing and flossing. This is because after our stomach digests them, the broken down food products are carried by our bloodstream into our lungs which can affect our breath. So take it easy on the garlic and onions if you want stink-free breath.
Dry Mouth
Saliva helps in softening the food that we eat so our stomachs can easily digest them. Aside from that, it also has one important function. It is responsible for washing out our mouths from excess bacteria. Think of it is a natural mouthwash that works 24/7. If you are experiencing dry mouth due to low saliva production, it can cause the bacteria to grow unchecked. Dry mouth is caused by salivary gland problems, medication or by breathing through your mouth. If you are experiencing this condition, drink lots of water and consult your doctor.
Foreign Object
This is mostly applicable to children. Bad breath can also be caused if a foreign object or body is lodged in the nasal cavity. If you suspect that this is the case, have your little one checked by a doctor as soon as possible. As a precaution, keep small objects away from children.
