The Truth Behind SLS and Fluoride Toothpastes
SLS, which stands for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, is a common ingredient that’s used in several toothpastes to help aid in foaming. SLS is considered a surfactant (foaming agent) that facilitates molecular dispersion. This allows molecules to disperse within the mouth itself which helps aid in clinging to food or bacteria particles, as well as removing surface stains on the teeth. While that sounds great, there are several reasons SLS is starting to be removed from toothpastes altogether. Here are a few of those reasons:
- SLS is a Carcinogen — The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database has categorized SLS as a moderate hazard. SLS has been linked to cancer, organ toxicity, skin irritation, endocrine disruption, neurotoxicity, and cancer.
- SLS Has Been Linked to Canker Sores — For those that do have sensitive teeth or gums, SLS has been linked to causing canker sores as well as ulcers in the mouth
- SLS Isn’t Cruelty Free —Many companies that produce sulfate containing products typically test them on animals to help measure the level of irritation of people’s lungs, eyes and skin.
- Not Good for Sensitive Teeth — SLS can be an irritant to those with sensitive teeth and gums

So… what about fluoride?
Imagine those days where we’re sitting at our local dentist, and our dentist tells us that fluoride in toothpastes is important for preventing cavities. We all remember those weird tasting bubblegum pastes that our dentists would apply to our teeth. So fluoride is good for us, right?
These days, the truth is that most municipalities include fluoride in drinking water sources, so we’re already getting enough fluoride from our water. In 2016, over 73% of Americans were getting enough fluoridated water to help protect their teeth.
What does this mean?
This means that using toothpastes that contain fluoride is fairly unnecessary as we’re already getting the recommended amount through our drinking water. At AutoBrush, our fluoride free products contain xylitol which is a sweetener derived from non genetically engineered corn. Xylitol helps eliminate cavity causing bacteria from collecting on your teeth.
